Year 7      No. 9

Newsletter of the Amateur Radio Christian Fellowship (N.Z.)

Warmest greetings to all members of this Fellowship, with your families and friends. This past month has brought many changes, nationally and internationally, economically and politically. But life continues, and we trust for the better, with the new political winds blowing across our nation and in America. There was surely never a time when prayer for our Government and leaders was more urgently needed, than it is now. May God guide and bless our new Government with wisdom from above.

Fellowship News

Numbers on the nets have continued to encourage us all, and we continue to offer grateful thanks to Kelvin and Trevor for their faithfulness as Netmasters. We send our special greeting to those who may be able to listen, but not transmit due to conditions (especially our VK members). The Lord bless you.

Trevor ZL2TNEven as I write today, Sunday 23 November, Trevor is celebrating his 82nd birthday, and we wish for Trevor and Ruth God’s rich blessing, with thankfulness for their participation and support for this Fellowship.

Also during this month the following have birthdays, and we wish God’s blessing on each:

Bill ZL2AYZ (7th) and Trace ZL2BS (30th).

Cecil ZL1BXT – Has recently been bereaved of his brother, Owen James, and we remember Cecil and Mavis just now, with loving sympathy.

Craig ZL1RAC – Good to hear Craig on air again, after a long time absent.

Gary ZL3SV – Has recently been in Christchurch where he spent time with Keith ZL3AHL making adjustments to antenna system. This has borne fruit, as Keith could come on air last evening (22 November) without need for Echolink. Grateful thanks to Gary for help he has given in assisting both Keith and Clive ZL1HZ to come onto nets with Echolink.

Stan ZL4OW – Recently had the pleasure of a visit from his two sisters, Lois and Jean. They all then had opportunity to visit their sister Grace (98) in Waimate. We just know how much Stan would enjoy their visit.

Peter ZL3AQN – We appreciated Peter coming on mobile (using a ground level magnetic loop) on Saturday and Sunday, 15 and 16 November, while he was in Glen Eden due to the loss of an elderly family member. We remember Peter at this time of bereavement, and trust he is now safely home in Lyttelton.

Clive ZL1HZ – Has recently spent two weeks in Australia visiting family, but other highlights were a visit to the Sunshine Coast Radio Club and to a New Life Assembly where he joined a congregation of around one thousand.

Eric ZL1ASI – As our northernmost member (Whangarei) we always are pleased to hear Eric’s voice and comments on nets. We think of Eric and Rowan as they give caring support to Rowan’s Mum.

Alan ZL2TAG – (Thailand) We have received an email and a valuable illustrated report prepared by Alan regarding the Christian use of local FM community stations where he and Averil are working in Thailand. We know this will be of interest, and will ensure it is sent to all members.  Please remember Alan and Averil in their service for their Lord in a land far from home, praying for their protection, for strength, and for good health.

New on Net

Iain ZL1KK (Matamata) – It was good to hear Iain tune in on 40m Sunday 19 October. We look forward to future contacts, and also with his XYL Ngaire ZL1KN.

Alan ZL2AEB (Tokoroa) – We have been pleased to hear Alan again (first came on 17/8). Alan attends Tokoroa Elim Church, and has involvement with Radio Rhema.

Fred ZL3FS (Woolston, Christchurch). First checked in on 7 September, and it was good to hear Fred (94) again on 1 November.

Personal Profile – KEITH LYON, ZL3AHL

“God’s call to serve Him comes in many ways, and I would like to share my calling with you.

“ As a young teenager in Bible Class and a new Christian, our minister at the time used to invite us teens (separately) home for tea on a Sunday afternoon and take us into his study and ask us what we wanted to do with our lives. I think he was possibly hoping that we would say we wanted to be a missionary or train for the ministry. But yours truly said I wanted to use my photography (which was a hobby) for the work of the Church. He was a little taken aback but said we should pray about it and leave it in God’s hands, as this wasn’t heard of at that time. What, a photography career in the Church? tut tut!   Our Bible Class leader took us through Romans 12 (the first few verses) which in the Good News Bible is headed “A Life of Service”. This we had to memorize.

“ I was fortunate to have been raised in a Christian family in Palmerston North where Christian values were the mainstay of family life.

“ Photography was my hobby as a teenager, and after completing an apprenticeship as a carpenter and joiner, a position as a Press Photographer became available in the Manawatu Daily Times. One day, after 18 months, the advertising manager approached me with an advertisement for an assistant photographer to the Presbyterian Church’s Publicity Department in Christchurch. To this day I believe God’s hand was at work, as I had no idea that this man was a Christian and also an Elder in the Church. I duly applied, and after an interview took up the position and moved to Christchurch at the end of August 1957. I held this position for 28 years, becoming Manager for 8 of those years.  Soon after arriving in Christchurch in  1957 I met my wife Grace and we married in 1959. We have two sons and a daughter, and have just celebrated 49 years of marriage. God has been good to us.

“ In the years of “centralisation” I moved the photographic unit to Wellington and occupied the first floor of Baptist House in Willis Street.  While in Wellington I attended the Wellington Polytechnic and studied for the Radio Ham examination, and duly passed – not with great marks, but still a pass, and have really enjoyed the hobby since.   After 8 years my wife needed help with our daughter, so we decided to return to Christchurch where we had family support.

“One of my main interests is Amateur Television, also being a committee member for many years, and President of Branch 05 for one year.”

Thank you Keith for supplying this Profile. God’s richest blessing be on yourself and Grace.

[We encourage others to send in their stories – always of interest].

In Conclusion

Words. What an impact they can have.  They have power to bless and lift up, or to curse and tear down. To encourage, or to destroy one’s confidence, causing long-term damage and pain. It has been said that, long after others have forgotten the actual words we speak, they will never forget how our words made them feel. This makes me ponder on the impact of my own words. “Does what I say about or to people bring encouragement and affirmation? Am I usually talking about what’s wrong with others or what’s right? Am I primarily positive or negative?”

Proverbs 10:11 describes the mouth of the righteous as “a well of life”.  Verse 20 calls the tongue of the righteous “choice silver”. Verse 21 says “the lips of the righteous feed many”. The two constants are (1)the person who is righteous, and (2) words that nourish and refresh others. Like our Lord and Saviour, who spoke life-giving words, we can encourage and lift the spirits of others today by what we say about (or to) them.

     It was only a kindly word, and a word that was lightly spoken;

Yet not in vain, for it stilled the pain of a heart that was nearly broken.

73, and committing you each to the care of our Lord Jesus Christ in the coming weeks,

Graham ZL3NZ and Mary ZL3MD
