Year 8   No. 4

Newsletter of the Amateur Radio Christian Fellowship (N.Z.)

Our greetings to all, in the name of Jesus Christ, our Saviour and our Messiah. We trust you all are surviving this rather cold and damp winter. Soon the earth will awaken again, and so begin to produce all kinds of beautiful things in the garden – including, sadly, weeds, and lawns in constant need of mowing. But this is like the cycle of life itself, which is composed of many seasons.

Everyone mentioned in this newsletter is important to our God, and to us, and we are so thankful to Him, and to you all, for your faithful encouragement. We pray for you ALL God’s richest blessing, His healing, His peace, His strength upon your lives, and of those whom you love or care for, whatever your circumstances, or wherever you may be.

NEWS OF AND FROM OUR MEMBERS

ADAM ZL1VI and TAMI ZL2SXY (Ophir) – This family are experiencing their first Central Otago winter, when even the radio room inside the house is too cold for the net on a Saturday evening! Adam was to start fulltime vineyard work at Bendigo on 21/6/10, with a 75k daily return journey. Tami, busy with home schooling, is also doing a health care course. Our thoughts with you ALL.

ALAN ZL2AEB (Tokoroa) – Good to hear Alan again 30 May. He is still driving the bus – up early and home 6pm, with two hours’ break during day. With home building jobs and Sunday visits to Hamilton, Waihi and elsewhere, we sadly don’t hear Alan so often, but enjoy hearing him on 40m.

ALAN ZL2TAG (Auckland) –  After their last departure from Thailand, Alan and Averil spent an enjoyable time in the Netherlands and UK visiting ex Thailand fellow workers and seeing family along the way. In a recent Prayer Letter, they gave thanks for companions and supporters over their 42 years of service. Theirs has been a wonderful example of lengthy committed missionary service in a foreign land, which has borne much fruit for God’s Kingdom. We look forward to future contacts with Alan on air, when he is able. We understand that on a recent visit south they enjoyed a cuppa with STAN ZL4OW in Oamaru. They will be travelling south on 1/9/2010, where Alan will take up  ministry at Calvin Community Church, Gore. We trust that his recent eye surgery was successful.

CECIL ZL1BXT (Hamilton) – Always encouraging to hear Cecil on air. He has 20 great-grandchildren, and speaking on air 22/5/10, he “fears for them” in this modern age. He says it is “only by God’s grace he is as well as he is”.   Yes, we know just what you mean, Cecil.

CIRRUS ZL2CVJ (Golden Bay, Nelson) – Wonderful to hear Cirrus again on 26/6/10. Things going quite well, she says, though havoc created by winds. Although has financial and health issues, Cirrus says she lives in “Paradise”, and thanks God. Thanks for keeping in touch, Cirrus.

DAVID ZL1UTS (Auckland) – Has at times been unwell, and would value prayer for this and also for alternative employment with more appropriate hours. We know many will be praying.

ERIC ZL1ASI (Whangarei) – Eric and Rowan moved house on 10 June, and we trust all went well with the move. We look forward to hearing Eric’s voice again, once they have settled in.

GARY ZL3SV (Motueka) – We received word today that Christine’s Mother (Irene Jones) passed away in the Ngaio Marsh Hospital, Christchurch in the early hours of Thursday 15 July. Our loving thoughts and prayers, and we know those of this Fellowship, will be with them in coming days.

GRAHAM ZL3NZ (Waikuku Beach) – At

last we can disclose what has been happening during recent weeks in “the Shed”. A small diversion from radio.

JAMES ZL3FV (Hokitika) – It was good to hear James on air 22/5/10, though sadly he had been unwell – also his Father has not been in good health. James is now working 3 nights per week at the Kingsgate Hotel in Greymouth, while also studying towards a Polytechnic Certificate in Community Support and working part time in a local Rest Home – a busy life. We wish James well with his studies, and Sarah in her work, where she is a gracious assistant in the shop where she works.

KEITH ZL3AHL (Christchurch) – At the Branch 05 meeting on Wednesday 7 July, Keith was presented with a Certificate and badge as an “Honorary Life Member” of the Branch.  Keith states: “While I knew it was coming it was certainly a surprise and I felt quite humbled by it.”  Keith, we know members of this Fellowship will join us in warmly congratulating you on this recognition of your service and commitment.  Our thoughts are with you and Grace.  [Click on photo, and drag corner outwards to enlarge]

KELVIN ZL1LY (Tokoroa) – Busily involved with producing newsletters for Greypower and local Diabetic group; also twice-monthly visits to Rest Home providing old-time music, along with other things. We much look forward to our contact with Kelvin each Sunday on 40m. Wish more could join us.

LOU ZL1USN (Nelson) – Lou had the sad task of putting down his beloved cat. Knowing the important role a pet can play in our lives, we are sorry, too. Lou is planning a trip to Christchurch later in July, so we are looking forward to him popping in, and perhaps having another tune on our organ! Lovely to hear those old hymns and choruses again. Has been doing home extensions.

MARK ZL4WT (Upper Hutt) – A warm welcome to Mark. First time on net 29 May, transmitting on 25w with a 2m antenna. Is new to amateur radio, and belongs to a local club. Mark is the caretaker at his Church, and involved in its ministry. Has 3 daughters: 1 at home, 1 in USA, and 1 at Canterbury University. Would appreciate prayer for their Upper Hutt community.

NOEL ZL1AIB (of Faithnet Media, Hamilton) – It was a pleasure to have Noel stay with us for two nights on his way en route from Invercargill (FGBMA Conference) to home. Edith sadly had to return home early due to a bereavement. Noel managed to catch up with local relatives during his stay.

PETER ZL1CDF (Huntly) – Peter and Estelle had the joy of a visit from their South Island daughter for a few days. In recent wet weather had water running down coax into radio shack. We do think of  this faithful couple with their ongoing health challenges.

PETER ZL3AQN (Lyttelton) – The Lyttelton tug was to enter dry dock 22/6 to ascertain any need for repair. Peter had been reading the book “In the Steps of St Paul”, written by H V Moreton in the 1930s. Many of you will remember that book on your shelves, as I do on my parents’ bookshelf.

SYDNEY ZL1BRS (Dunedin) – Today a most welcome note arrived from Syd and Mary, telling that his “old Icom rig has packed a sad, and will take a while to get into action on ARCF again.” Syd and Mary have just finished an Alpha Course, and “it was great”.  Thank you so much!

TREVOR ZL2TN (Palmerston North) – Is now enjoying returning to activities, like the Feilding Band Festival on 30 May. We are thankful that no injury was sustained when Trevor fell while carrying timber. Thank you yet again, Trevor, for your faithfulness in our Fellowship.

In addition to the above, the following checked into Nets since our last Newsletter:   BOB ZL1BMA; BRUCE ZL4BEP; GARY ZL2GLM; GRAHAM ZL3NZ; GRAHAM ZL3NK (ChCh); JAMES ZL3IJ; JOHN ZL3TR; MARY ZL3MD; PAUL ZL2BEQ; PETER ZL2APJ; RAY ZL4WRC (Dunedin); RAY ZL2TDO; STEVE ZL3TS (ChCh); WARREN ZL3WPS.

THE DELIGHT OF DUTY  “If you love Me, keep My commandments” (John 14:15)

Augustus H. Strong (1836-1921) was a highly respected pastor and seminary president. Many years after his death, his son is noted as telling about the time he was baptized by his father in a church in Rochester, NY. Walking home with his father after that mountaintop experience, he had exclaimed, “Father, I’m so glad I was baptized. It made me feel so good.” His dignified father, looking down at his son, sternly replied, “Feeling or no feeling, it was your duty.”  Perhaps a deflating rebuke, but also wise counsel. Surely our motive for any Christian activity should be in response to our Lord’s words in John 14:15 (above) and not just so we may “feel good”. Today there is a great need to re-emphasize obedience, whether such actions make us feel good or not. Our goal should be to bring joy to our Lord. Love-inspired duty ought to control everything we do.   [from Our Daily Bread]

73s, and our warmest wishes,

GRAHAM ZL3NZ and Mary ZL3MD
